The Science Center is currently hiring Learning Exchange coordinators for the 2017-2018 Academic Year. Learning Exchange (brown.edu/go/LE) is an after-school initiative that uses computer science and engineering design to help middle school students develop a passion for learning. As a coordinator, you will be responsible for driving the program's vision and community impact. You will work closely with your co-coordinator to recruit and lead a pool of college students to teach middle school students how to write computer programs and follow the design process. You will also be responsible for interfacing with leaders in the community and partnership middle schools. The Science Center is currently seeking undergraduate students with a strong passion for teaching.
Exceptional organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills are essential for this position. Experiences with computer science and/or engineering/design are strongly encouraged, but not required. In addition to the above, the Coordinators will assist with the following: • Coordinating events that are pertinent to the academic and social goals of the Learning Exchange; • Developing lessons in different math and computer science courses; • Organizing the Mentoring Program, pairing together middle school students and Learning Exchange mentors, in order to engage and excite young students in the sciences; • Maintaining a network with computer science and math departments, both internal and external to Brown. Applicants for this position must enjoy working with schools, teachers, students and Brown faculty. Good communication, classroom management and event planning skills required. All coordinators are involved in the planning of the events calendar for the Academic Year. Coordinators are additionally required to lead weekly Learning Exchange meetings with mentors and Science Center faculty and administrators. Overall, Learning Exchange Coordinators should possess a drive to constantly refine the program's approach to engaging students in challenging projects, learn more about effective teaching practices, and seek out resources at Brown and in the broader community to meet the needs of a diverse set of students.
