Job Description The Classics Department is looking for an enthusiastic and conscientious undergraduate Student Office Assistant. This position will require a minimum of 5-8 hours per week within a set schedule. As a student administrative worker, you will be integrated into many facets of department life. The main responsibilities include, but are not limited to: completing a diverse number of projects as assigned by administrative staff and faculty; assisting with front office operations (answering phones, greeting visitors, photocopying, filing, doing data entry, and preparing mailings, etc.); working in the department library (moving, sorting, and shelving library materials as needed, helping to maintain book stacks, and helping to maintain the library database); and performing related duties as assigned. There is also a possibility that the Student Office Assistant will assist with the staffing of department lectures and events.
Job Requirements Applicants must be current Brown undergraduate students. Since an appreciation of Classics and some knowledge of Greek/Latin would be helpful, a strong preference will be given to advanced undergraduates concentrating in Classics. All applicants must be willing to commit to the position for a minimum of 5 hours per week and preferably for the entire academic year (2014/2015). Other requirements include: excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills; proficiency in Microsoft Office and Adobe Acrobat; ability (and willingness) to lift 25lbs, climb stairs, and travel between university buildings regardless of the weather; careful attention to details and deadlines; reliability and good judgement; a willingness to use technology; and a commitment to report hours worked in a timely fashion. Previous office experience and library science skills are a plus.
